A hopeful tiny heart was struggling mightily not to break, amidst a scattering of illegally abandoned household items. It was a puppy that wasn’t aware that he had also been abandoned.
Animal control officer Sharon Norton was informed of this heartbreaking scene early on Monday morning in Lincoln County, Mississippi, along a peaceful section of road.
She drove to the spot straightaway and found out the small puppy clinging to life atop a chair, near to where a TV had been dumped as well. The dog appeared to be hungry, but clearly refused to budge, he seemed to believe that the person who had placed him there would surely come back to pick him up.
“He looks like he’s been there for about a week, he is skin and bones,” Norton said.
Norton approached the poor pup and reassured him that she was there to help. She gave him his first meal in days. Despite the puppy’s long vigil, holding out hope for his owner who’d never return, the appearance of someone who actually cared immediately made him feel at peace.
“He was very happy when I picked him up and carried him to the animal control truck,” Norton said. “I could feel his tail hitting my back, wagging. He knows he’s safe now.”
The dog was then immunized, dewormed. After that, Norton gave him to the Mississippi-based Brookhaven Animal Rescue League for protection. The dog will be made available for adoption.
Although this case of abandonment isn’t the worst she’s seen, according to Norton, she is hopeful that justice will be done by speaking out about it.
“I’m hoping somebody that recognizes the puppy and the recliner will put two and two together and send me a message to help me find the person that did this,” she said.
